PU vs PVC Upholstery and Foam Density: A Guide for Spa Furniture Buyers

How PU and PVC leatherette compare for massage tables, chairs and stools, and how to specify foam thickness and density for comfort and durability.

Key takeaways

PU leatherette is softer and more breathable; PVC is tougher, more stain-resistant and slightly cheaper. Specify foam by both thickness (5 cm portable, 6–7 cm premium) and density, and approve physical colour swatches before production.

Both can be produced in many colours. For massage oils and frequent disinfection, ask for an oil-resistant grade.

Foam: thickness and density

Thickness alone is misleading. A 5 cm high-density foam can outperform a 7 cm low-density foam after a year of use.

  • Portable tables: 5 cm high-density is the market standard.
  • Premium portable: 6–7 cm, sometimes with a memory-foam top layer.
  • Stationary beds: 6 cm high-density for all-day comfort.

Colour approval

Screens distort colour. Request physical swatches, choose a colour code, and approve a pre-production sample so every batch matches.

Care tips to pass on to your customers

Wipe with a mild soap solution, avoid alcohol-heavy cleaners on PU, and use a fitted cover or disposable sheet to extend upholstery life.
